Spar design: S-series or T-series?
The S-series jib reefing features a single-groove spar (S for single). Its patented assembly system allows for very easy installation with no need to unstep the existing forestay.

The T-series jib reefing features a twin-groove spar (T for twin). It allows the use of the jib reefing on a hollow forestay when racing, or the setting of twin head sails, to avoid hoisting the spinnaker.

Chainplate or turnbuckle?
In the UK, the forestay on most sailing boats is fitted with a bottlescrew (turnbuckle) to adjust stay tension. The reefing drum must also sit above the bottlescrew and so choice of system, must therefore, be the turnbuckle system as the link plates supplied are longer (11 holes) than the so-called chainplate system (5 holes).  The turnbuckle system should also be chosen if you wish to set the headsail higher off the deck and to enable easier maneuvering of your anchor. If the forestay is of a fixed length, the use of the chainplate system allows to position the tack point as low as possible.

Which size reefing system is right for my boat?
Plastimo produces 4 sizes of reefing system to fit all sailing boats from 4 - 11 metres (13 - 36 feet).  While the boat length is important, you must also consider the forestay diameter and the headsail size.  For example, in the case of a 6 metre boat the 406 model will offer the best compromise.  However if the headsail size is much larger than the maximum sail area recommended, selecting a 609 model is a better option.

Choosing your reefing system

Model Boat length (metric / imperial) Maximum sail area
406 4 - 6 metres (13 - 19.5 feet) 12m(129 sq. feet)
609 6 - 8 metres (19.5 - 29.5 feet) 25m(269 sq. feet)
811 8 - 11 metres (29 - 36 feet) 35m(376 sq. feet)

A hard act to follow!
Tuesday, 5 January 2016  |

I have restored several small classic sailing boats and have fitted Plastimo reeling systems to them all as they are simple, excellent value, easy to fit and use, maintenance free and, above all, unobtrusive in appearance, vitally important to preserve the classic look. This is my first purchase from Seateach (who I have known of for years) for my latest restoration, an 18ft. Heard Tosher, a powerful gaff-cutter which I sail single-handed-handed. She has a Wyckham-Martin furling system on the jib, but needed proper furling on the stay-sail to avoid the dodgy performance required to run forward, climb onto the foredeck, and pull it down and secure it. This system will be ideal. I ordered on Christmas Eve at an incredibly low price, vastly lower than the nearest competitor, The order was acknowledged, I was kept fully informed, and it was delivered free, well-packed and complete, almost as in Christmas had not intervened within a few days. It comes with comprehensive written instructions for mast-up or mast-down fitting. I am not prone to exaggeration, but do not believe that you can better the product, the value, or the service from Seateach. Well done!

Good kit but...
Wednesday, 23 December 2015  |

Check all the components are right before you try and set it up on your boat. 1 Alan key screw was the wrong size and had to source the right one elsewhere. A 20p problem can hamper your day just as much as a 20 quid one. Came next day delivery, can't fault that.

Response:

Hi Nicholas, I'm sorry to hear your kit had the wrong allen screw in. We were made aware that Plastimo had supplied a number of kits with the wrong size in - we thought we were through them all so I'm sorry this one was missed. I'm happy to reimburse you for any extra costs.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth
