TruDesign - Composite Skin Fittings Threaded

TruDesign

TruDesign range of Skin Fittings are the first composite through hull fitting to be certified by the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) Belgium.

Designed and made in New Zealand, the Skin Fitting body and nut are moulded from a glass-reinforced nylon composite. High strength, high-modulus glass fibres provide dramatic strength, stiffness, toughness and dimensional stability. These properties allow a significant weight reduction over metallic fittings.

TruDesign Skin Fittings eliminate the corrosion and electrical bonding problems associated with metallic fittings.

Frequently asked questions

  • What sealant do I use on the threads?
    Thread sealing options # Standard Ceelon Thread tape # 3M 5200 fast cure # Sikaflex 291i # Locktite 5331 # Arbokol 1000
  • Can you use epoxy resin to adhere and seal a TruDesign Skin Fitting into a composite or wooden material hull?
Yes In fact a West type epoxy system is ideal and adheres well to the composite fitting and the hull. This method makes the Skin Fitting an integral part of the hull. Polyurethane based marine sealants such as 3M Fast Cure or Sika 291i may also be used.
  • What if I need to replace a TruDesign Skin Fitting that has been epoxied into the hull?
The Skin Fitting will last the life of the hull. However if for example a 1" toilet outlet needed to be replaced with a 1½" toilet outlet; Wedge a wooden bung into the Skin Fitting from the outside and use a hole saw to drill out the fitting with a diameter 1mm larger than the diameter of the threaded part of the new 1½" Skin Fitting. Chisel off the surround from the outside of the hull and fit the new 1½" Skin Fitting.
  • Are TruDesign Skin Fittings certified?
YES The TruDesign Skin Fittings are certified by the International Marine Certification Institute (IMCI) in Belgium, and Bureau Veritas to ISO 9093-2 for use above and below the waterline. All the Certificates are available on the TruDesign website
  • Manufactured from a glass-reinforced nylon composite - High strength and light weight
  • Compatible with all hull types - Can be used on aluminium, steel, wood or GRP hulls
  • Immune to corrosion and electrolysis - Long life with no concerns over decreased performance due to corrosion
  • Chemical resistant - Impervious to diesel, petrol and antifouling paints UV resistant - Will not degrade or discolour with ultraviolet light from the sun
  • High quality surface finish - Will not discolour with green film as similar bronze fittings do
  • Paintable - Can be painted with all types of antifouling
  • Limited Warranty TruDesign accepts no responsibility for Ball Valves or Skin Fittings which are improperly installed, especially in the case where a Ball Valve with tapered threads has been used.

Hull Compatibility

The Tru-Design Skin Fittings are suitable for installation in all types of hull construction; steel, aluminium, fibreglass - cored and solid, wooden sandwich. Tru-Design Skin Fittings are also able to be used on caulked solid wood hulls – care should be taken to only locate the skin fitting in the centre of any individual plank.

When used in below waterline applications, a Ball Valve should be directly connected for safety and compliance to relevant marine standards.
