Choosing Your Reefing System

Spar design: S-series or T-series?

The S-series jib reefing features a single-groove spar (S for single). Its patented assembly system allows for very easy installation with no need to unstep the existing forestay.
The T-series jib reefing features a twin-groove spar (T for twin). It allows the use of the jib reefing on a hollow forestay when racing, or the setting of twin headsails, to avoid hoisting the spinnaker.

Chainplate or Turnbuckle?

In the UK, the forestay on most sailing boats is fitted with a bottlescrew (turnbuckle) to adjust stay tension. The reefing drum must also sit above the bottlescrew and so choice of system, must, therefore, be the turnbuckle system as the link plates supplied are longer (11 holes) than the so-called chainplate system (5 holes).  The turnbuckle system should also be chosen if you wish to set the headsail higher off the deck and to enable easier manoeuvring of your anchor. If the forestay is of a fixed length, the use of the chainplate system allows to position the tack point as low as possible.

Which size reefing system is right for my boat?
Plastimo produces 4 sizes of reefing system to fit all sailing boats from 4 - 11 metres (13 - 36 feet).  While the boat length is important, you must also consider the forestay diameter and the headsail size.  For example, in the case of a 6-metre boat, the 406 model will offer the best compromise. However, if the headsail size is much larger than the maximum sail area recommended, selecting a 609 model is a better option.

Model Boat Length Maximum Sail Area
406 4-6 metres (13-19.5 feet) 12 sq. metres (129 sq. feet)
609 6-8 metres (19.5-29.5 feet) 25 sq. metres (269 sq. feet)
811 8-11 metres (29-36 feet) 35 sq. metres (376 sq. feet)
